It is estimated that approximately 17 million dogs in the U.S. are considered obese.  A dog is considered obese if it is 20% or more above its ideal weight.  What are the main causes of obesity in dogs?  Same as in people... too much food, too little exercise.  The extra weight in your pet can cause breathing problems, heart disease, skin and hair coat problems, arthritis and a general "slowing down".  Sometimes, it's difficult to know if your dog is overweight.  A popular method to check is the 'rib test.'  Place your hands over the rib cage.  Is it difficult to feel the ribs or are they covered by lots of flesh?  Other signs of obesity are a thickened waist, fat on the lower back and at base of tail, and a thickend trunk near the hind legs.

Fortunately, a drug to fight canine obesity has recently been released by Pfizer Animal Health. It is called Slentrol.  This is a daily therapy that is adjusted at regular intervals to promote steady weight loss.  An easy to dose liquid, this drug helps reduce the pet's appetite and decreases lipid absorption allowing the pet to gradually shed the unwanted pounds. Please call us if you have concerns about your pet's weight.
